Seaboard Marine, a leading marine transportation company, continues its commitment to sustainability by expanding its renewable energy projects to its locations in Honduras. Recently, the company installed 42 solar panels and three inverters at its La Fraternidad yard and another set of 42 solar panels at its Medina yard, achieving a combined capacity of 1,200 kWp. These installations mark significant steps in Seaboard Marine’s ongoing efforts to reduce its carbon footprint and improve energy efficiency across its locations. The solar panels at La Fraternidad cover a total area of 1,070 sq ft, saving an estimated 38% in energy costs. At Medina, the panels cover 713 sq ft, generating 18,840 kWh annually and saving an estimated 29% in annual energy costs. Moreover, the main container yard in San Pedro Sula will soon complete the installation of 72 solar panels, resulting in renewable power at all three main container yards in Honduras.
Seaboard Marine’s journey towards renewable energy began in 2017 with the installation of solar panels generating 182.6 kWp in the Dominican Republic. This initiative was followed by a major solar project in Costa Rica in 2023, which involved installing panels covering 8,611 sq ft, generating 98.6 kWp of energy, and preventing nearly 5.5 tons of CO2 emissions annually. In 2024, the company completed a solar installation in Villa Nueva, Guatemala, continuing to advance its renewable energy initiatives.
Eddie Gonzalez, President and CEO of Seaboard Marine, emphasized the practical benefits of these projects, stating, “Investing in renewable energy is not only about reducing our environmental impact but also about improving the efficiency and sustainability of our operations. These installations are a key part of our strategy to create a more responsible and resilient company”.
Seaboard Marine’s dedication to green initiatives extends beyond solar projects. In 2020, the company earned a Silver LEED certification for its Maintenance and Workshop facility in PortMiami, highlighting its commitment to environmentally friendly practices. In 2023, Seaboard Marine made a significant stride in transforming its fleet with the purchase of the LNG-powered vessel “Seaboard Blue.” This acquisition is part of a broader plan to have a total of nine LNG-fueled vessels by the end of 2025, further emphasizing the company’s efforts to reduce its environmental impact and enhance sustainability across its operations.
As a wholly-owned subsidiary of Seaboard Corporation, Seaboard Marine has been at the forefront of ocean transportation since its establishment in 1983. Today, it stands as one of the most experienced ocean transportation companies in Florida and is PortMiami’s largest shipping line, continuing to lead by example in pursuing sustainable business practices.
By investing in renewable energy projects across its locations, Seaboard Marine is enhancing its operational efficiency and contributing to a cleaner, more sustainable future for the marine transportation industry.
